What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma: “Silent Thief of Sight”

Glaucoma occurs when the aqueous humor fluid in your eyes is unable to drain properly, resulting in increased eye pressure. This can happen because too much fluid is being produced in the eye or because there is blockage in the eye’s drainage system.

With increased eye pressure the potential for damage to the retina and optic nerve increases. This is important because the optic nerve transmits images to the brain; if this transmission is damaged, you can have permanent vision loss.
