Partial-Thickness Corneal Transplant

A full corneal transplant is not necessary for every patient who is experiencing corneal problems. At South Texas Eye Consultants, our experienced doctors offer DSEK (Descemet’s Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty), which is a partial-thickness corneal transplant, for patients who have only partial damage to their cornea.

During DSEK, the inner layer of the damaged cornea (the endothelium) is removed and replaced with healthy donor tissue.

Benefits of DSEK Over Full Corneal Transplant

  • Thinner amounts of tissue are removed
  • Corneal incision is smaller
  • Fewer sutures are required
  • Recovery time is quicker; normal activities may be resumed within one week for some patients
  • Structural integrity of the eye is maintained
  • Reduced risk of post-surgery astigmatism

Full DSEK recovery may take up to six months as your vision continues to improve and sutures are removed.

Potential DSEK Complications

  • Infection
  • Rejection of the donor cornea
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Swelling
